Functional workouts are invading every aspect of the fitness industry. And, it’s about time! Exercise isn’t just about heavy lifting anymore; it’s about being conscious of the way your body is working. The C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield offers an innovative approach to functional training with state-of-the-art exercise equipment like the Precor Queenax “jungle gym.” Our certified YMCA trainers utilize the Precor Queenax to bring members through variations of functional training such as balance, core strength, HIIT, body weight strength, and plyometric movements, among others. But what exactly is ‘functional’ training?
Functional exercise, by definition, is designed to train the body to be more efficient in real-life movements, including squatting, reaching, bending, and twisting, among others. Our Queenax group exercise classes are geared towards individuals who want to lead a healthier lifestyle. And, the group setting offers camaraderie between like-minded individuals, offering a support system along the way.
During Functional Training Fitness classes, participants use industry-leading equipment, which includes TRX suspension trainers, body bars, resistance bands, rebounders, and other useful training equipment. This special equipment helps to integrate a workout that can be modified for participants, ages 16 and up, and of all skill levels. In addition to this equipment, the Queenax offers extra features, including monkey bars, Superfunctional ladders, a swing bar, and ‘Stroops Son of the Beast’ elastic battle ropes. The Stroops attachments will debut in January along with our all-new Functional Training Fast Pass format, which will give members extra flexibility when choosing days and times to attend group exercise classes.
Functional training has made my body better and more efficient over the years. After many years of teaching back-to-back high-intensity classes, functional training has allowed my body to keep moving, and move better. I encourage you to incorporate functional workouts into your current exercise routine, or simply use it as a foundation to get started on your fitness journey. Our trainers will be there to help you and encourage you every step of the way.
