Pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace may change the life of someone living with Parkinson’s disease. Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic found that patients can experience a 35 percent reduction in symptoms by riding an indoor, stationary bicycle for one hour three days a week. While cycling is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, there is compelling evidence to show that it does make a real difference for many who try it.
Beginning Monday, April 22, the C.W. Avery Family YMCA will offer Pedaling for Parkinson’s classes. Classes are designed to empower participants by optimizing their physical function, improving their gait, balance, speech, handwriting, and overall endurance, and helping to delay the progression of symptoms.
Days:
Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays
Time:
11 a.m.-Noon
Pedaling for Parkinson’s is FREE and open to the community. Class participants must receive clearance to participate from their doctor prior to class participation. Medical clearances can be sent to Health and Wellness Coordinator Suzanne Ventrice at [email protected] or faxed to (815) 267-8601.
